Legends of Anaesthesiology Prof. Saeeda Haider

Prof. Saeeda Haider, a graduate of Dow Medical College, has all that it takes to be a leader. An Anaesthesiologist by profession, she received MCPS and then FCPS degree in Anaesthesiology from College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan in 1994. She remained Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Surgical Intensive Care and Pain Management, Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital Karachi, Dow University of Health Sciences from 2005 to 2014 and Dean Faculty of Anaesthesiology, College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) from 2014 to 2016. Currently she is HOD, Department of Anaesthesiology & Critical Care, The Indus Hospital Karachi.

Pakistan Society of Anaesthesiologists feels proud to have such individuals in the field of Anaesthesiology. Prof. Saeeda Haider remained the Treasurer, Gen. Secretary and the President of PSA Centre as well as Karachi Chapter. At present she is Patron of PSA Karachi Chapter.

It was because of her untiring and zealous efforts that 3rd SACA congress attained such glorious heights. It was the usual comment from all 3rd SACA delegates: It was the best Congress of South Asian Confederation of Anaesthesiologists”.

Prof. Saeeda Haider likewise in any conference /congress has always been the key figure in formulating the scientific programme. Her contributions are not limited to the scientific programme, most of the organizational aspects of any event of PSA, e.g. 25th Silver Jubilee conference, 8th SAARCAA Congress, CMEs, PG Courses and Annual Conferences, owe it to her for being immaculate.

Her activities are not limited to PSA, other medical associations and organizations have also benefitted from her professional abilities. She has held various portfolios. She has been the Gen.Secretary and the President of Pakistan Society of Intensive Care, Treasurer of DOTS (Dowites Operation Theatre Society), Treasurer of Pakistan Medical Association Karachi, Founding Treasurer of Amnesty International Karachi Chapter, Member Editorial Board of JPMA, Member Executive Committee of Pakistan Medical Association, Vice President of Pakistan Medical Association Karachi and the Vice President of SAARC Association of Anaesthesiologists.

She is a key figure in a number of private-public partnership projects started on voluntary basis. She pioneered the thought of giving back to the “ALMA MATAR” and made with the help of class fellows and runs the emergency operation theater of Civil Hospital Karachi, the largest tertiary care hospital.

She is a proud Pakistani and regards this very feeling as her most treasured asset. She thanks God whatever God has given her and wants to make the changes that she can make, the room for innovation being tremendous with her mind.

Prof. Saeeda Haider has travelled to USA, UK, Denmark, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, France, Holland, South Africa, Malaysia, Turkey, U.A.E, Iran, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India and Nepal either as a guest speaker or to attend the WFSA meetings. She is indeed a brilliant speaker. Not only for juniors, her lectures are always beneficial for her colleagues and seniors as well.

She is articulate, brilliant, enterprising, and very far-sighted. Moreover, she is humble, approachable, professional, and knows her job very well. At the end of the day, if we have more people like her in our field of Anaesthesiology, perhaps anaesthesia in Pakistan won’t need any marketing beyond simply introducing them to the world!
