Legends of Anaesthesiology Prof. Mehdi Hasan Mumtaz

Born on 3rd of March, 1946. Completed his medical education, from Nishtar Medical College Hospital Multan in 1968. Had special interest in the subjects of physiology & pharmacology, so on the advice of Professors of physiology & pharmacology, joined the department of anaesthesia at Nishtar Hospital Multan as a medical officer/registrar in 1969.From Jan.1971 to Nov.1971 joined the anaesthesia department at King Edward medical college as a DA student but left for UK in Nov. 1971.

Worked in UK, in different capacities, in the specialities of anaesthesia, mainly at Manchester royal infirmary & Queen Elizabeth hospital Birmingham, where he worked with Prof. AR Hunter, Prof. Robinson, Dr. Selwyn Crawford and Dr. MD Vickers (later became Professor Vickers). Passed his examination of Fellow Faculty of anaesthesia Royal College of surgeons (FFARCS) in 1978. Had been member of different societies like Intensive care society of UK, Association of anaesthetists of great Britain & Ireland, European society of intensive care. He is a fellow of international college of surgeons. Had vast experience of working in European countries like Sweden, Holland, Germany and Belgium.

After coming from UK, he preferred to join Nishtar Medical College & Hospital Multan, where he opened the doors of teaching in anaesthesiology and raised the strength of the department from 5 in 1980 to 45 in 2004, in addition to producing 148 specialists in this speciality. He used to go to DHQ & THQ hospitals to deliver lectures of common interests, to highlight the importance of anaesthetists in the hospital set up. He used to travel to European countries especially Sweden & UK, twice a year, and used to bring copies of interesting articles published in 18 journals related to anaesthesia, intensive care & pain, to pass on the latest knowledge to the trainees and to pass on to everyone in the national conferences in the form of lectures.

He was a devoted ,willing & upright teacher both in the class room and on bedside. He took teaching as a hobby and went out of the way to teach. Was president of PSA centre twice and president of PSA Multan thrice. He was the first to build intensive care unit, first in the country, at Nishtar hospital Multan, in 1981. He was the founder president of Pakistan society of intensive care.

Retired in 2006.Now working as Consultant anaesthetist /intensivist at Manchester royal Infirmary in UK.
